The Gospel Saturated Blog

The gospel is good news before it is good advice. It tells us who Jesus is, what he has done, and what that means for our lives and our world.

Israel, The Church, and the Christian Conscience

What do Christianity and Judaism have in common, if anything? How should the Church understand its relationship with the Israel of today? What responsibilities do Christians have towards the Jewish people? And how should our answers to these questions shape the way we engage in public discourse about contemporary political and social issues?

The Revival Of Antisemitism (Or Was It Ever Really Dead?)

The reality is, the world feels sharply split right now: pro-Palestinian or pro-Israeli, and the gap only seems to be getting wider. Along with that widening gap is a troubling and disturbing shift in how Jewish people are being spoken about and portrayed. What I’m witnessing is a revival of antisemitism (or was it ever really dead?) and its re-emergence is deeply concerning.

The Headship Bait-And-Switch

“The husband is the head of his wife.” It’s a favourite refrain in complementarian circles, particularly when the conversation turns to biblical manhood, leadership, and a husband's supposed God-given authority over his wife, commonly called “headship.” The explanation usually goes something like this: Christ has authority over the Church, and since Paul compares a husband to Christ, a husband likewise has authority over his wife. Ephesians says so, and that's that.

The Kingdom Of God Is Like…

I used to think the Kingdom of God was like something out of a medieval fairy tale: turrets stretching skyward, covered in ivy, stone towers glistening in the evening sun. Perhaps a little something like the Cair Paravel of Lewis’s imagination, with wide, rushing rivers curving around its feet and carpeted meadows stretching out behind it like skirts.

Saved

Everyone wants something to believe in. From aliens to political conspiracies, from the supernatural to the meaning of life, flat earth theory (yep, it really is a thing) to climate change, we're all looking to take a position on something. We're all looking for a belief or an opinion to call our own.

Musings On A Kingdom Of One

I was a different person back then. At least I'd like to think so. Dogmatic. Self-assured. Self-righteous.  It’s hard to know for sure. What part is personality, what part is learned behaviour, what part is a combination of both?

Why Being Kind Is Better Than Being Right

I'm in Bible College this year, working towards a Diploma in Biblical Theology (this will, I know, NOT COME AS A SHOCK TO SOME OF YOU...) and really, it's the dream of a lifetime to spend 5+ hours each week in biblical conversation with others of a similar persuasion.

Are There Prophets and Apostles Today?

When prophecy and apostles are examined across the whole story of Scripture, modern charismatic claims become much harder to sustain. This article considers their biblical purpose, authority and relationship to the finality and sufficiency of Scripture.

Tongues, Continuationism & The Modern Charismatic Movement

Firstly, I want to make it clear that the goal of this article isn’t to critique or discredit the many good people of faith who land in a continuist lane. I have beautiful friends who affirm the charismatic gifts, including speaking in tongues, as ongoing and normative for the church today.

The Cold Comfort Of Cessationists

I read an article recently accusing cessationists of denying the ongoing ministry of the Holy Spirit, describing them as "heartless and misguided exegetes”, "affronted by miracles and healing."

The Lost Warriors Of Ephesians 5

From the opening chapter, Paul words draw our eyes above the visible world and to Christ enthroned over every ruler, authority, power, and dominion. In chapter 2, we’re reminded that we were once dead in sin, walking according to the ruler of the kingdom of the air. In chapter 3, Paul says the wisdom of God is now being displayed through the church to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. By the time we reach chapter 6, the veil is pulled back completely. We’re told to put on the whole armour of God and, in doing so, to stand against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11), the great enemy of the saints (Revelation 12:11-10, 13:7).

What Is An Elder?

Honestly, I think this article will probably just end up as ‘one for the archives’. The question of what an elder is, or who should be recognised as one doesn’t find its way into too many everyday conversations (it’s hardly the most engaging conversation-starter at a dinner party, although, you know me, haha, I’m always willing to give it a crack…).
