The Gospel Saturated Blog

The gospel is good news before it is good advice. It tells us who Jesus is, what he has done, and what that means for our lives and our world.

The Confessing Church Today: Learning From Bonhoeffer In The Age Of Progressive Christianity

The Church has always faced the challenge of compromise. In the Constantinian era, pagan practices and political power began to blur the distinctiveness of Christian faith. Centuries later, the authority of kings such as Henry VIII pressured the Church to bend to political demands rather than remain anchored to Scripture.  In every age, whether through state power, cultural winds, or intellectual trends, the temptation has been the same - to exchange the costly call of Christ for an easier, more acceptable version of faith.

Should Christians Vote Or Be Involved In Politics?

Should Christians vote? Or be involved in politics? It’s an interesting question, perhaps even an unnecessary one for some of you, and you may be wondering why I’m asking. I grew up in a religious community that taught emphatically that Christians shouldn’t be involved in politics or have any degree of civic engagement (ie the police force, law, navy). We are in the world but not of it.

Hell, Judgment, And Conditional Immortality

Among the many doctrines that shape Christian belief about the end of all things, few are more misunderstood than conditional immortality (sometimes also called annihilationism). The term simply names what Scripture has long taught: that immortality is not something human beings possess by nature but a gift God gives through Christ, received in resurrection. And in The Myth of Inherent Immortality, I argued that everlasting life is not something human beings possess by nature - it is the gift of God, given in Christ. So what do I believe about hell, judgment, and eternity?

I Am Pro-Life & Here’s Why I Think It Matters

This article is on a topic I have long wanted to write about — the pro-life debate. I have hesitated many times, being acutely aware of the sensitivity of the subject and the strong emotions it stirs. My hope is that what follows will be received in the spirit of grace and compassion, while also pointing to truth and to the reality that our decisions matter, especially in the choices we make about life itself.

The Myth Of Inherent Immortality

There is no doubt we are more than just a body and a mind. There is something else, something that sets one person apart from another, even in the case of twins, who may outwardly appear identical in every way. Despite our shared genetics or family resemblances, each person is truly original - a distinct, unrepeated identity of mind, body, and soul.

Why Theology Is For Everyone

As someone pointed out to me recently, and quite rightly so, the word theology can sound somewhat academic. Something relegated to dry and dusty libraries, for men with stiff upper lips and starched upper collars.

When Experience Trumps Scripture: The Danger Of Feelings-Based Faith

What are feelings? We all have them, right? Anger, sadness, happiness, surprise… There are, in fact, seven basic feelings that all humans share in common; disgust, contempt, and fear make up the remaining three. Feelings are valid and important - signposts to our inner world that we should acknowledge and understand. Yet we must also handle them with caution.

Deathbed Conversions: Are They Genuine?

Deathbed conversions. What do we make of them? Perhaps not unreasonably, we maybe feel a bit of tension around deathbed conversions, wondering how genuine they might be.

Belonging

Anyone who knows me well will know I’m a bit of a sucker for TV shows that trace long lost family, connect up missing relatives, follow the trail of family ancestries, or discover biological connections through DNA. To say I could watch them all day long is probably not an exaggeration.

Two Kingdoms

One of my favourite themes in the Bible is that of the two kingdoms. There’s so much happening across the Bible's pages that it can be easy to miss this theme at first glance. Understandably, we often spend more time on what seems more central - the ministry of Jesus Christ and the New Testament stories of the early church, which fill our sermons, books, and conversations.

Does ‘Son of God’ Mean Jesus Is Not Divine?

For many Christadelphians, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other Biblical Unitarians, Jesus is the Son of God but not 'God the Son'. The Christadelphian statement of faith insists that Jesus is the Son of God but not divine in the same sense as the Father, not eternal before Bethlehem, and not part of a Trinity. Instead, Jesus is understood to be fully human, uniquely conceived by the power of the Spirit, and exalted to divine authority after his death and resurrection.

The Church Isn’t For Unbelievers

"The church isn't for unbelievers." Sounds pretty unfriendly and exclusive, right? But, before you get all hot under the collar, hear me out...
Headship

The Headship Bait-And-Switch

“The husband is the head of his wife.” It’s a favourite refrain in complementarian circles, particularly when the conversation turns to biblical manhood, leadership, and a husband’s supposed God-given authority

israel and the church

Israel, The Church, and the Christian Conscience

What do Christianity and Judaism have in common, if anything? How should the Church understand its relationship with the Israel of today? What responsibilities do Christians have towards the Jewish people? And how should our answers to these questions shape the way we engage in public discourse about contemporary political and social issues?
