The Gospel Saturated Blog

The gospel is good news before it is good advice. It tells us who Jesus is, what he has done, and what that means for our lives and our world.

Dual Citizens

I was born and raised in New Zealand, the land of the long white cloud and a ratio of nearly six sheep for every one person. I often remember as a child watching the sun in summer sink below the horizon late at night, and, in winter, layering up as warmly as possible through the short, dark, freezing days of relentless rain and, oftentimes, snow.

Believer’s Baptism

The baptism that the Bible speaks about involves personal faith and conviction, a reorientation of one's life (repentance), and full immersion in water. The word baptism comes from the original Greek word "baptizō" (βαπτίζω), which means "to dip, immerse, or wash." It was used in ancient times to describe submerging something in water, often a cloth being dipped in dye or ceremonial, full body washing.

Women Must Keep Silent – Examining The Troubling Texts

Despite the strong evidence for women’s involvement in the life and ministry of the early church, there are three specific New Testament passages that continue to be used to limit or prohibit that involvement today. These are 1 Timothy 2:11–12, 1 Corinthians 14:34–36, and 1 Corinthians 11:1–16. For many, these are the so-called “troubling texts.”

So You Want To Follow Jesus?

Maybe you've been thinking you want to follow Jesus and become a Christian, but just aren’t sure how to take that step. You think you might know what it means to follow Jesus, but it'd be good to get some clarity and direction - what's next?

Before + After

In the beginning, there was nothing. A vast, endless emptiness. Deep, restless waters, devoid of life, and overshadowed by a darkness as complete and as final as death itself. It is over this dim, watery world that the Spirit of God hovered, waiting, moving; poised to begin the work of creation. And it is into this dark world that God said. "let there be light".

The Dark Heart Of Christmas

Christmas is a unique time of year. Traditionally, it’s seen as a season of joy, hope, celebration, and family—a chance for many to unwind and find rest as the year draws to a close.

Loving The Church

Loving the church can be hard.. Frankly, at times, she can seem like a big, fat disappointment. Infighting. Divisions. The failure of leaders and the apathy of congregants. The assimilation to culture. A preoccupation with prestige and power. Intolerance. Liberality. Sometimes the church is hard to love.

Heaven + Earth: The End Of The Story

Inarguably, it’s the end of the story that holds the greatest weight. While the beginning provides context and setting, and the middle gives shape and drama, it’s the ending that brings meaning and resolution. It’s the ending that makes sense of everything - that allows all the intersecting threads of risk, joy, sorrow, and homecoming to find their place within the narrative and, ultimately, in its conclusion.

Gideon’s Fleece + The Dark Night Of The Soul

There was a time, not so long ago, when my world was very dark. Have you ever stood outside, on a moonless night, with the thick, velvety air pressed all around you and the inky black sky above, and realised that you could see precisely nothing? That's the kind of dark I mean.

An Argument For The Trinity

If you’re an orthodox Christian, already familiar with the doctrine of the Trinity, you might like to head somewhere else right now. This article will probably be, as they say, preaching to the converted. But if that’s not you, and the idea of the Trinity is new, challenging, confronting, downright heretical, or, as far as you’re concerned, completely unbiblical, just hear me out.

Husbands + Wives

I recently studied the book of Ephesians with a small Christian connect group I'm fortunate to be a part of and it was an amazing few weeks, taking a deeper dive into this ancient letter. As we worked our way through the letter, week by week, we heard words of wisdom, counsel, and encouragement from one of the greats of the Christian faith, Paul the Apostle.

Women, The Church, And The Gospel Story | Reframing The Conversation

The ongoing conversation about the ‘role’ of women in the church, in marriage, and in society is not new. Nor is it unique to our time. Early Christians also had to navigate and reevaluate this issue, particularly in the light of the gospel story.
Headship

The Headship Bait-And-Switch

“The husband is the head of his wife.” It’s a favourite refrain in complementarian circles, particularly when the conversation turns to biblical manhood, leadership, and a husband’s supposed God-given authority

Israel, The Church, and the Christian Conscience

What do Christianity and Judaism have in common, if anything? How should the Church understand its relationship with the Israel of today? What responsibilities do Christians have towards the Jewish people? And how should our answers to these questions shape the way we engage in public discourse about contemporary political and social issues?
