One of the most serious ways grace is misunderstood is what can be called gap theology: the idea that when Scripture talks about grace, it means Jesus steps in when we’ve done all we can, making up the shortfall.

When prophecy and apostles are examined across the whole story of Scripture, modern charismatic claims become much harder to sustain. This article considers their biblical purpose, authority and relationship to the finality and sufficiency of Scripture.
Firstly, I want to make it clear that the goal of this article isn’t to critique or discredit the many good people of faith who land in a continuist lane. I have beautiful friends who affirm the charismatic gifts, including speaking in tongues, as ongoing and normative for the church today.
